S: It truly is fascinating.
L: What’s that?
S: For someone who claims to hate all of mankind, it’s interesting to see just how human you really are.

A/N: Because the first story was a success, and heck, why not make another one? And angsty plot bunnies are making my head overload, so here is Makorra fanfic number two. Hope you like it~!
You’re always busy, he sighs, closing his eyes. You never have time to talk to us anymore.
You smile, apologetic, and reject another outing with the three of them. You wonder what was the difference. You let them live here in the island. You always see each other at breakfast. You still smile at them, greet them, ask them if they were comfortable.
It’s not like they still had a damn tournament to win for, anyway.
But you don’t say anything.
He wouldn’t understand.

I hate the fact that 50 Shades of Grey started out as Twilight fanfiction. And I hate the fact that this is known about it. Why? Because even more so than before, fanfiction gets a bad name, and it’s only going to get worse because of this book. It’s popular despite the fact that it sucks (although I have not yet read it myself, I’ve heard from a number of people, critics included, that it is indeed terrible). Also, the phrase “mommy porn” makes me fucking gag.
But I digress.
When people think fanfiction now, they’re just going to think50 Shadesbecause that’s what’s in the mainstream. Before its release, I always felt like the majority of people didn’t know what fanfiction was. If I told a person about it, I’d often have to explain myself and what exactly it meant. Maybe I’m wrong and maybe they did know, but it’s becoming more and more clearto methat now they FOR SURE do know what it is. The problem here is that they don’t know that there’s more to it than what50 Shadesis presenting fanfiction as: shit.
Yes, I understand that there are terrible fanfictions, that there are fanfictions that are just self-insertions, fanfictions that have jumbled plot, bad plot, or no plot, that are just awful pieces of who-knows-what. I’ve seen a lot of terrible fanfiction. Sure, even I wrote some terrible stuff back in the day (please only go looking for it if you want a laugh). But there are fanfictions that are none of these things. There are fanfictions that make me root for the characters, that make me see life in a different way, that make me bawl like a baby. There are fanfictions that are so effortlessly eloquent, without being wordy or overly descriptive. There are fucking QUALITY fanfictions out there.
And this is why I hate that 50 Shades started as fanfiction. Because now many people will assume that since I write fanfiction, I can’t write well or I can’t write anything original, or that anything I try and publish will just be a fanfiction with replaced names/setting/what have you. But you know what? Just because I enjoy writing and reading fanfiction doesn’t mean I can’t write original work. Just because I write fanfiction doesn’t mean I’m a bad writer.
I look forward to the day when I become a published author of an original novel. Because it will happen, just you wait. And I look forward to the day when a young girl or a teenage boy asks me why I became a writer, when I see in their eyes that they have big dreams too.
And I’ll tell them the fucking truth.
I’ll tell them I became a writer because I fell in love with writing long ago. Because of fanfiction. I’ll tell them that I’d always written stories, even as a kid, but when I discovered fanfiction at 17, something changed. I’ll tell them how I would rush home from high school and put off my homework so I could write fanfiction. How I’d read it for hours, think for days about my next fic. How it captured me, made me passionate, made me want to be better, made me realize that yes, I’m a writer and I have a story to tell. I’ll tell them how even into my twenties, I was still writing fanfiction, still squeeing every time I got a positive response for it, still wanting to improve, still having a story to tell.
And I’ll be motherfucking PROUD.
This. Just all of this.
Be proud of yourselves, fanfiction writers. One day, you might write your own tale.

Bloody brilliant.
